Dr. Angelo Subida is a psychotherapist, author, and speaker. He is author of the book, “Secrets Of Your Self,” “God’s Inner Healing,” “Seminarian Pastor Care,” among others, and the online psychotherapy site http://www.drsubida.com. He has appeared as an expert on psychology and therapy issues in national television and live webcasts, including 700 Club, Mel and Joey, Q-11, GMA7, ABS CBN 2, Bantay Bata, and TV 5.
Dr. Subida practices both on-site (traditional face-to-face) and online (non-traditional web-based) psychotherapy. Though he holds sessions in the hospital or counseling room, Dr. Subida believes in the effectiveness of innovative, “out of the box” therapy, combining healing-fitness-fun into natural surroundings, coffee shops, parks, or the great outdoors.
Founder/director of an innovative Psychotherapy Clinic, Dr. Subida is a member of the Philippine Mental Health Association or PMHA (initiated/founded by World Health Organization in 1950). He is also an advocate in the mental health movement led by the International Center for the Study of Psychiatry and Psychology (ICSPP) that educates the public about the potential dangers of “take-a-drug mentality” of psychiatric medication and biochemical theories of mental health. Aside from his hospital-based, outdoors, and mobile private practice, Dr. Subida is an international associate of the International Society for Mental Health Online (USA) and Psychotherapy Networker USA, and Phil-Coordinator for Beyond Affairs Network Canada.
Dr. Subida is an ordained minister. He has taught as professor of psychology and spirituality in an international school/seminary and is a long-time missionary of a world organization. Prior to pioneering a new global recovery ministry and practice, Dr. Subida had pastored in the local church and served as short-term missionary to other nations for many years.
Dr. Subida’s educational background includes B.S. in Psychology, graduate studies in M.A. Counseling Psychology, a Master of Divinity (M.Div.), a Doctor of Ministry (D.Min.), and a Ph.D in Clinical Christian Psychotherapy. His doctorate degree and dissertation on psychological stress disorders and mental health for ministers was supervised and approved by Dr.V. Bautista, professor and chair of the Clinical Psychology Department of the University of the Philippines (U.P.), for AGST. He also received instruction in Christian Psychotherapy from Dr. William Wilson, a professor emeritus from Duke Medical Center USA.
Besides formal academic education, Dr. Subida himself holds “diplomas of pain.” He has had the privilege of experiencing some of life’s deepest wounds. That gave him a greater capacity to hurt more, to care more, to weep with those who weep.
He consulted and studied under the most qualified of psychologists and psychiatrists on mental health. Sadly, he discovered widespread incompetence, incomplete treatment, or false medication that only makes people get sick all the more. Essentially, he also sees how modern-day psychiatry and psychology suffer immeasurably compared to work already done in Scriptures in healing psychological, emotional, spiritual, and even physical illnesses.
Because of his innovative, inspirational approach and personal background, Dr. Subida has become in a way a “maverick psychotherapist.” He offers something extra and transcending than what most secular Ph.Ds and MDs etc. offer today. His therapy approach isn’t mere textbook theory – it’s real life in the trenches and beyond. Dr. Subida has walked the walk and his healing process comes from his own deepest experiences. The combination of training, theory, practice, faith, and personal life experiences then makes Dr. Subida much better at the practice of psychotherapy and counseling than …. well, than he thinks he is.

DO EDUCATIONAL DEGREES MATTER IN CHOOSING MY THERAPIST?
By John M. Grohol, Psy.D.
The short answer is no, the educational background of the mental health professional will have little impact on the outcome of your treatment. There is virtually no research that has been published that suggests you will get a more positive outcome or get a more positive outcome more quickly if you choose a higher-priced, more-educated professional. What research does show is that experience and specialization matters. Generally, the more experienced a professional is in a specific topic area, the more likely that person will be able to help you more quickly.
So rather than focus on educational degrees, focus your search for a professional on how much experience they’ve had in treating your concern in the past, and whether they have a specific specialization in that concern. Typically you will only be able to discover this information by asking the professional.
Finding a mental health professional that is going to be best for you is more of an art than a science. The educational background of your psychotherapist should not be a deciding factor in this process. Your best bet is to determine what kinds of things are important to you and finding a professional that seems to fit with your needs and personality.
